Spotlight on Sarah’s Home

During the month of December, Deborah highlights different non-profit organizations in the Pikes Peak area because this is the time of year these organizations raise the majority of their funds to keep them running for the following year. Today, she is joined by Vicki Proffit of Sarah’s Home.

The mission of Sarah’s Home is to provide sanctuary for girls rescued from sex trafficking as they reclaim the life they were created to live.

Sarah’s Home provides a home, food, clothing, support, and counseling for girls aged 12-18 who have been rescued from sex trafficking. This home is licensed in the state of Colorado for up to 8 girls-which is huge because there are less than 20 beds available in all of Colorado for this age group of survivors. This facility does not use federal funds so the girls are able to stay as long as necessary. This enable the counselors, teachers, and other staff of Sarah’s Home to work with the girls and their families, to provide a way for the girls to either have the ability to restore family relationships and possible to go home to their family.

The average age of rescued victims is 12 years old. Only 3-10% have been kidnapped or forcibly taken. The others, often through social media channels, have been lured in by a pimp who offers love and promises of care. The socioeconomic level of these girls has no bearing. It can happen to ANY child because they are vulnerable. The largest common cause among the victims is a lack of relationship with a healthy male figure (such as a grandfather or father). Sometimes drugs are a factor. But a girl who is on drugs doesn’t make as much money. One girl can bring in $2,000-$3,000 a night for her pimp, but she gets almost none of that. She may also have 800 different partners in a year.

Sarah’s Home has psychologists, teachers, and other trained professionals on site to help the girls who have been placed in their care. So much brainwashing occurs to victims of sex trafficking, making it difficult to re-integrate back into their original families, attend mainstream schools, and function in society.

Come listen to today’s broadcast to find out ways to get involved! Because Sarah’s home does not receive federal funds, monetary donations are always helpful. They could also use gift cards and tickets to things that any typical girl would like to do, such as: theater, concerts, skiing, rafting, zoo, clothing stores, restaurants, etc. Since Sarah’s Home is also a home, they are always in need of things any typical home with 8 girls would need, such as: toilet paper, feminine products, paper towels, etc.

To make a monetary donation, you can donate online at https://www.sarahshome.us/ or send gift cards and money to P.O. Box 29, Peyton CO 80831. If you would like to donate material items, due to security reasons you can call (719) 347-3026 to schedule a time and place for the delivery.
